For decades, we’ve been taught to monitor our heart health, track our sleep, and pay attention to our nutrition. But there’s another vital health indicator that rarely gets the attention it deserves — one that influences how we move, how we age, and ultimately how long we stay independent.
That indicator is muscle health.
Muscle Health: The Forgotten Vital Sign
When most people hear “muscle health,” they think of strength training or aesthetics. But true muscle health goes far deeper. It includes:
-
Musculoskeletal pain levels
-
Bone density
-
Tendon and connective tissue strength
-
Muscle strength and quality
These systems determine how resilient we are. How well we move. How well we recover. How long we can stay active, capable, and independent.
Emerging research now shows something remarkable:
Muscle health may be one of the strongest predictors of long-term quality of life — and even lifespan.
Yet for most people? It’s overlooked entirely.
A Personal Turning Point
Before building Suji, founder Alex Birks was a national-level boxer. Competition shaped his life — the training, the discipline, the desire to keep pushing himself further.
Then he snapped his knee: a broken tibia, torn ACL, and damaged meniscus.
Doctors told him he’d be on bed rest for 16 weeks. No training. No loading. No real movement.
But to him, that wasn’t an option. He refused to let his muscle waste, losing the muscular health he had spent years building. Instead, he searched for a way to maintain — and even improve — my his muscle health safely while injured.
That search led him to the science behind targeted compression, our innovative take on blood flow restriction training. The research was clear: when applied safely and intelligently, it could help keep muscles active and strong even when you couldn’t train the way you used to.
The problem? No one had created a device that made it simple, safe, and accessible.
So we decided to build one.
Turning Recovery Into Progress
Suji was created to give people — athletes, rehab patients, active individuals of all ages — a smarter way to:
-
Activate muscles faster
-
Build strength with less strain
-
Boost circulation
-
Reduce joint stress
-
Recover without losing the progress they’ve worked for
The goal wasn’t just to create another training or recovery tool. It was to make muscle health something anyone could strengthen, protect, and track just like any other vital sign.
The Future of Human Performance Starts With Muscle Health
We created Suji because muscle health shouldn’t be an afterthought — it should be a core part of how we measure and improve overall well-being.
Your muscles are what keep you moving. They protect your joints. They support your bones. They let you live life on your own terms.
And when you can strengthen them with less strain — whether you’re training for performance, recovering from injury, or simply wanting to stay active as you age — everything in life gets better.
Suji exists to make that possible.
